San Francisco Street Artists
Since 1972, the Street Artists Program, under the direction of the San Francisco Arts Commission, has encouraged talented artists by licensing them to sell their work on the city’s bustling streets. It’s about San Francisco street artists working for themselves and making a living by their own hands.
Enterprising artists, art-minded San Franciscans and visitors from around the globe benefit from the voter-mandated program. "Street Artists Day" was declared by a mayoral proclamation on November 1, 1991 and by Board of Supervisors declaration on September 20, 1997.
Today, excellent wares—from amber earrings to wood sculptures—delight shoppers in the city’s most frequented sections, including Fisherman’s Wharf, Downtown, and Union Square. Almost 400 craftspeople selling their own work join in an unparalleled city program that champions their efforts as businesspeople and as artists.
Store owners and street artists build a community by sharing San Francisco’s streets—and its rich commerce. And San Francisco’s reputation as a mecca for art and culture grows beyond the interiors of its celebrated galleries and museums to include its streets.
Before a committee appointed by the Mayor, artists and craftspeople must demonstrate that they create and sell their work unaided. In return, they receive licenses, spaces designated by the Board of Supervisors, and the encouragement to sell their crafts to thousands of shoppers.
The Street Artists Program is financially self-sufficient, supported solely through licensing fees. San Francisco's program is a model for street artists programs throughout North America and Europe.
