Comics and Commuinty

An open and audience inclusive discussion about the role independent comic creators, publishers, and distributors play in the comics community and how we can work together using principles of community organizing and resistance.We're going to talk about the internet, drawing nights, DIY networks, stores, distributors, publishers, friends, fans, clients, media outlets, tours, pooled resources and convention. Bring your ideas.

Raising Kids and Raising Hell

A discussion of parenting zines and creating community. We’ll talk a little about the history of parenting zines, the need for parenting allies, and the importance of diversity to combat mainstream images and values towards parenting. Dialog is welcome, we’ll read a few short pieces… come and bring the kiddies…

Starting (and Running) Your Own Magazine

So you’ve got zines under your belt and you want to take it to the next level. Do you ever wonder what it takes to start up and run your own magazine? Blood? Sweat? Tears? Maybe a little bit of all three? If anyone would know, it would be the hardworking people at the award-winning magazine Hyphen. Find out the answers to these questions and more at this talk by the Publisher and the Founding Editor. Followed by a short Q&A.

Bookbinding: Basics & Beyond

Ready to take your zines beyond the staple? Would you like to learn how to create blank journals or other small books? We will cover a variety of useful bookbinding techniques, including single-sheet folded books, single & double signature pamphlet stitch, stab binding, and more. Something for all skill levels! Materials included.

Gouache Painting – Tricks, Tips, and Techniques
• 12:00pm - 5pm, Both Days - Space 85 in the Exhibit Hall
Come watch painter/illustrator Eve Skylar work on some of her newest work in gouache - from start to (a reasonable) finish. She’ll be painting through most of the Zine Fest and will be on hand to answer questions about color mixing, paint handling, different tricks and tips, the illustrative process, and any other questions you might have! -Eve Skylar
